Week 4 Update

Kia Ora Whanau

The children put on an awesome production at the Whole School Assembly on Thursday.  Thank you to those parents who came along to watch.  I have uploaded the video of the play to the blog.

Review of the Week
*  We continued to learn about statistics in maths.  We did this by comparing the number of pets that the children in Room 1 have with the number of pets that children in Room 4 have.  We have presented our data in various ways.
*  Much of our literacy time was spent practising for the play and the assembly.  We also continued to look at different types of birds in our reading groups.  We started our 'We are....' writing exercise.
*  In Art we are learning about self portraits.  We are finding this quite a tough exercise!
*  We have had some discussion around how to be positive and the impact that has on the group.

Week 5
*  A big focus for the week will be our 'We are....' exercise.  We will be producing a class poster and each of us will be writing a postcard and sending it to a class at Torbay School on the North Shore in Auckland.  This is predominately a writing exercise with a focus on metaphors.
*  We will get underway with our maths groups and will focus on place value.
*  There will be heaps of sport on this week culminating in the School Swimming Sports on Friday afternoon.
*  On Thursday we will start to focus our attention on Camp.  We go to Wainui from 20-22 March. I popped out on Thursday to inspect the camp.  I have attached a few pics.

Reminders
*  Please check that your child comes to school each day with a hat and drink bottle.
*  There are 3 weeks left of swimming.  Children must bring their togs on a Monday and Thursday.  If they are not swimming please send them to school with a note as to the reason why they are not to swim.  I have duty on Monday, Girls cricket at lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday this week but I will be able to take the children for a lunchtime swim on Thursday.

Week 3 Update

Kia Ora Whanau

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all at the Parent/Teacher interviews this week.  Thank you very much for your feedback.

Review of the Week:
*  The highlight was leading the Senior Team time.  Conner, Rithush and Max performed admirably as the MC's and the actors produced an excellent performance for their first time on stage.
* We took on Room 4 at Tug-o-War and had a massive syndicate game of kazoodle-noodle!
* We have been focussing on statistics in maths and have been looking at World Statistics.
* In literacy we are reading about various types of birds.
* We have been drawing a birthday poster which includes some personal identity.
* We learn't a new maori word game

We are delighted to have 3 cultural leaders in the class:- Kanye, Navia and Rithush

Week 4:
*  The big focus for the week will be to prepare for Assembly on Thursday.  This is our first of two times during the year when we will run assembly.  Please feel free to come along at 2.15pm and see our play.
*  In literacy we will complete our reading on birds and then begin a very cool writing exercise where we will write a postcard about ourselves and send it to another school in New Zealand!
*  In maths we will continue with statistics and this time use the number of pets that the class members have as our data.  We will compare this to Room 4's data.
*  In Art we are going to paint self-portraits.
*  In Inquiry we will start to look at our individual strengths and weaknesses and how this can impact
on the team.

In week 5 we will start to focus our attention on Camp.  Thank you for completing all the camp forms.  Swimming sports takes place on Friday afternoon on 3 March.  Class swimming will go through to 16 March.  Thank you for sending your children along with their togs and towels.

Week 2 Update

Kia Ora Whanau

We enjoyed learning about First Aid this week.  The lesson was run by Paula from St John.

We also learn't about CyberSafety.  It was quite alarming to note that a few of the children said that they had read abusive language in the online games that they play.  We enjoyed welcoming all the new children and teachers to Ilam School at the Mihi Whakatau this week.  A special welcome to Abdullah and Jacob.

Reminders:
Please could you ensure that your child comes to school with a hat and a drink bottle everyday this term.
We swim as a class on Mondays and Thursdays.  Please could your child bring their togs to school on those two days and also on any other hot day.  I will supervise a lunchtime swim on hot days.
Thank you to everyone for getting their camp forms in.  If your child's camp form has not been sent to the office please could you send it through on Monday.

Thank you to everyone who has booked an interview this week.  I look forward to hearing from you what you believe I need to know to best assist your child with their learning.

Once I have been out to camp and we have presented our class play at assembly (both on Thursday 23 February) there will be further camp information coming out.  You are most welcome to pop in to Assembly on 23 February at 2.15pm to see the classs play.
