Week 4 Update - Wonderful teamwork

Kia ora whanau

To pay for the 2 new worm farms we have been working in the school gardens.

It was great to see the children working so well together.
Next week we will continue learning about fractions and our literacy programme will be based around the Run a km for Kids.  Please could you support your child and the school with this very important fundraiser.

The worms are happy in their new home!  The children were very interested in the earthworms they found when we were working in the garden!  We wish the choir well for their major rehearsal on Thursday.

There will hopefully be a fishy surprise this week....!!!

Kia Ora Whanau

Overview of week 2
1.  Maths - Measurement.  We have learnt about time, temperature and length.
2.  Literacy - We completed ANZAC and have started to focus on punctuation and our Mihi's
3.  Inquiry - we have learnt about the make-up of the earth

The big highlight was the commencement of 'Passion Time'.  All the children returned to class absolutely buzzing!  Thanks once again to the parents involved.  We also had a Professor from the University and an International sportsman join us for our opening!  The children loved Wheels day

The children enjoyed the kahoots!  (Please ask them what a kahoot is!)

Week 3
1.  Maths - We will continue to look at those 3 areas of measurement.
2.  Literacy - We will keep our focus on punctuation and we will complete our Mihi's.  We will be sharing our mihi's with our Buddy Class (Rm 11) on Friday.
3.  Art -  We will spend more time on our calendars
4.  Inquiry - We will have a focus on Rocks

We are all looking forward to our Field trip to Town on Thursday.  We will be visiting Quake City and also the 'Rock-on' display in the Museum.  We will be using our day out to the full and also having a look around the Art Gallery.

The Hagley winter sport starts on Friday.  All other sport will start in a few weeks time.  We will also be getting two new worm farms in Week 4 with the intention of selling 'fertilizer' from Term 3 onwards.

Ilam school Rugby team

After a few years absence the Ilam school rugby team has re-emerged.  They competed at the recent Rugby Fun Day at Burnside park and they will be taking part in the regular Friday afternoon winter competition at Hagley.  Not in the picture are Patrick Watts and Leona Temoana.  We wish the team well for the season.  Conner has been appointed captain and Erin is vice captain.

Week 1 Update

Kia Ora Whanau

Well we are now back up and running!

Review of Week 1

  • SSgt Keni came to collect the camouflage net.  Once again a big thank you to Burnham Military camp.  We have almost finished our ANZAC unit.  Some of us just need to complete our reflections
  • We have enjoyed learning about time and measurement in maths.  We will continue with our learning of measurement next week.
  • We have loved our learning through our Inquiry topic.  We have learnt about the make up of the earth by cutting open hard boiled eggs!  We also did a soil inspection by digging in the long jump pit.  We were interested to learn that there is clay underneath the soil at Ilam school.
  • Ms Briscoe introduced us to our Art topic which is to produce a calendar.  We will also be doing some art through our learning about Matariki.
  • Well done to Dominic, Kanye and Conner for taking part in the Rugby Fun Day
Exciting news
I was delighted to hear that both the school and the class are keen to further develop the number of Worm Farms and by so doing develop our Environment project.  In week 4 I will purchase two more worm farms, which will double our current number.  By the time that term 3 comes round we will be in a position to sell our fertilizer.  This will give us an opportunity to learn about marketing and selling (watch out for our webpage...!!!!), research, packaging and customer service.

Once the 4 farms are estabilished and the 'business model' is up and running there will be opportunity for further expansion!

We will run a massive bake sale/sausage sizzle to raise funds for the worm farms and also raise funds for Job the school's sponsored child.  Details will follow in the next week.

Week 2
  • Passion time starts on Thursday.  Very exciting
  • We will be writing our Mihi's this week, completing our ANZAC reflections and having a week on grammar.
  • We will continue to look at the earth and soil in Inquiry.
  • It is Wheels Day on Friday.  If your child has a scooter please could they bring it on Friday.
Week 3
  • Thank you to Tahlia, Ali, Lotta and Monali for putting up their hands to be parent help on our Field trip to town on Thursday 18 May.  We now have enough parents for this trip.
  • Zones cross-country for Micky and Frank.  We wish them well in their training
  • Winter Sport matches start on Friday 19 May.
